Apologies go to William Carlos Williams

I got this poem in the mail on recommendation from an acquaintance..

“An Apology”

Forgive me
for backing over
and smashing
your red wheelbarrow.

It was raining
and the rear wiper
does not work on
my new plum-colored SUV.

I am also sorry
about the white

— F. J. Bergmann

They liked the Haiku-like spareness, the imagery. They completely missed the fact that it is a wry spoof of William Carlos Williams’ most famous poems. Red Wheelbarrows, White Chickens, and plums are all from Williams’ poetic palette. I thought it was funny.
